Regional Seminar: Demystidying the Competency Based Approach to ELT
Thursday 29 November 2012, CAMELTA Centre chapter had its seminar at College La Retraite. This heavily attended seminar was presided at by the Inspector Coordinator in charge of Bilingualism, representing the delegates for Basic and secondary Education of Cameroon. The theme for this session was: ELT in Cameroon today and tomorrow: The Competency Based Approach from Basic Education to Secondary Education. The choice of this theme was motivated by the recent and abrupt introduction of a number of changes in our educational system and the reaction of teachers to this, especially their inability to master the basic tenets of the CBA. The seminar aimed to demystify the CBA by taking a more practical look at the approach.
Given that the Ministry of Basic Education adopted the CBA five or so years ago, their experience was vital defining a way forward for secondary education. The keynote speaker was the Inspector of Pedagogy for Bilingualism in the Ministry of Basic Education who gave participants an overview of the CBA and its practicalities. His rich presentation clarified a number of doubts on the CBA. This was followed by practical sessions on teaching real life speech, language functions and authentic notions facilitated by Florence Forchu, Emma Mojoko, Florence Muluh, Moukoury Rosemary among others.
